A lawyer becomes a target by a corrupt politician and his N.S.A. goons when he accidentally receives key evidence to a serious politically motivated crime.
Robert Dean is a mild-mannered lawyer who works in Washington, D.C. He is on the trail of a kingpin named Pintero. Meanwhile, a politician named Thomas Reynolds is negotiating with Representative Phillip Hammersley about a new surveillance system with satellites. But, Hammersley declines; Reynolds has Hammersley killed, but the murder is caught on tape, and the taper is chased by Reynolds' team of N.S.A. Agents. The guy must ditch the tape, so he plants it on Dean (unbeknownst to Dean). Then, the N.S.A. decides to get into Dean's life. That is when Dean's life began to fall apart all around him, with his wife and job both gone. Dean wants to find out what is going on. Then, he meets a man named "Brill" who tells him that Dean has something that the government wants. Dean and Brill formulate a plan to get Dean's life back and turn the tables on Reynolds.
First of all, the plot in Enemy of the State was NOT complex. It was not suspenseful or an on the edge of your seat thriller. However, it was entertaining. The plot revolves around the conspiracy theory again. The movie plays on the audiences' paranoias of government agencies such as the NSA. We have seen more than our share of these plots manifest themselves in television and movies lately. Will Smith gives an average performance, but he's no superstar. I thought the movie's clever use of special effects combined with the unveiling of sci-fi spy technology made the movie more bearable. But the film does bring up an interesting issue: the look at the role of government in society today. It leads us to question the powers of such an entity and its effects on everyday life. But, the social statement is probably lost somewhere in the lingere shop. By the way, I'd like the address of that shop from Jerry if possible. Overall, it was a slightly above average film.
Tony Scott did a great job directing this wonderful piece. Will Smith actually acted in this movie unlike (ID4 and MIB).Great story and this movie is very fast, always keeps at the edge of your seat. You might have seen this kind of story before but this one is directed by Tony Scott and that does make a difference. Why don't you find out yourself, I am sure you won't be disappointed.
The social criticism is as unforced as the humor (and the references to "The Conversation") in this 1998 conspiracy thriller, whose spirited action is balanced by an almost contemplative attitude toward surveillance phobias and the movie cliches they've spawned.
Labor lawyer Robert Dean (<a href="/name/nm0000226/">Will Smith</a>) finds himself being chased by rogue U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) agents looking for a tape that shows politician Thomas Reynolds (<a href="/name/nm0000685/">Jon Voight</a>) murdering Congressman Phillip Hammersley (<a href="/name/nm0001673/">Jason Robards</a>) because Hammersley doesn&#39;t support a Telecommunications Security and Privacy Act that would expand domestic surveillance powers of law enforcement agencies. As Dean&#39;s life begins to fall apart, the only one who can help him is former government operative turned surveillance expert Edward Lyle (<a href="/name/nm0000432/">Gene Hackman</a>).Enemy of the State is based on an original script by American screenwriter David Marconi. Reynolds shoots Lyle in the hand and demands the tape, so Robert takes him to the restaurant where the Pinteros are having dinner, knowing that it is being watched by the FBI. Saying only that Reynolds wants &quot;the videotape&quot;, Robert makes Joey Pintero believe he&#39;s asking for the tape of Pintero and his mob buddies while Reynolds thinks he&#39;s talking about the Hammersley tape. Reynolds gets in Pintero&#39;s face and demands the tape, and Pintero reacts by pushing him away. Suddenly everyone pulls out their guns. Pintero refuses again to hand over the tape, so Reynolds and his NSA goons head for the door. Suddenly, the cook fires a shot, and everyone else opens fire on each other. Minutes later, the FBI breaks in to find Robert and the cook the only ones left standing. As the paramedics take away the two survivors, Fiedler (<a href="/name/nm0085312/">Jack Black</a>) and Jamie (<a href="/name/nm0005085/">Jamie Kennedy</a>), Robert slips out the door. Lyle exits the van and, carrying Babe, they slip away. In the final scene, Robert and Carla (<a href="/name/nm0005093/">Regina King</a>) are watching a news report about the bill being dead—for now. Robert, who has been cleared of any wrong doings, changes the channel and discovers a goodbye message from Lyle, who has escaped to a tropical location. The unrated version of Enemy of the State that has been released on DVD features several extended plot scenes but one has to decide on one&#39;s own whether they are an enrichment for the movie or not. But there are also some new scenes that feature some more cursing or erotic.
